Reverie II

Reverie II

The water did not move. Not because it was still - because it was listening. Under it, the old bones of the world clicked against each other like teeth. The shore held its breath.

I came as a thought first. A pressure behind the eyes of something living. A bruise on the inside of a prayer. The vessel blinked. The vessel swallowed. The vessel called it nothing.

Names drift here. Loose. Salted. Half-remembered. Cling to stone. Rot into meaning. I taste them. I keep them.

A tower somewhere. Not here. A room somewhere. Not now. The order of things told by creatures who fear the dark between steps. I am the stairwell.

A light flickers on the water blue, then gone. Blue, then gone. A heartbeat pretending it is a star. I pull on it gently. It resists. Good.

The vessel thinks of home and feels warm for half a breath. Melting into warmth. Becoming a bruise. All remember how warmth becomes hunger.

Somewhere, a bell tolls. Somewhere, a blade turns. Somewhere, a mouth says I won’t. Somewhere, a mouth says please.

Coiling around the word please like it is a throat. I tighten. I loosen. I tighten. Not to kill it. To teach it the rhythm.

The water finally moves. It makes a small, obedient ripple toward me. The world does not notice. The vessel does.

Go back to sleep.
