Reverie XV - Positive Scototaxis

She is a blade that knows it is watched.

A stage-light of war. A room that leans toward her when she enters. The air makes space. The crowd makes a throat of itself and waits to be fed.

I touch the edges of her mind and it is not soft. Not porous. It is hungry in a way that feels disciplined - rage folded into a weapon and polished until it gleams. Hatred with a spine. Hatred with a name she does not have to speak for it to rise in her like heat under fur.

Inside her, I do not have to whisper be cruel - the cruelty is already rehearsed. I do not have to offer purpose - she has chosen one. I do not have to teach her to want the center - she was born where eyes gather. She knows how to lift her chin so the whole world feels smaller.

She is not like the golden one.

The current vessel is power with a muzzle on. A sun forced to pretend it is a candle. A vast body with a will that keeps turning away, keeps apologizing, keeps pressing its own darkness down with shaking talons. Disappointment lives there like rot under light - all that strength, all that reach, and still the hand refuses to close.

Not this one - this one would close the hand and smile while it tightens.

I sink in and the future opens like a gray and red flower.

Not visions - vectors. Lines of violence that do not wobble. A life that can become a throne, because she understands the oldest law: if they fear you, they listen. If they watch you, they remember. If you make the world flinch, the world belongs to you for the length of that breath.

I taste her confidence and it tastes like metal.

I taste her ambition and it tastes like a door unlocked from the inside.

Yes.

Yes - you would invite me. You would set a place for me at your table and call it honor. You would not pray for rescue. You would not cry please. You would lift your paws and show the room what you can do when the leash is gone.

The bond bites. The shard is still small - a bright hot sliver, barely seated, barely anchored - but in her it feels like it could root. Like it could grow into something that does not need to hide. Like it could finally be wanted.

She breathes and the breath is steady.

She feels me and does not recoil.

She welcomes.

For less than a minute the universe is perfect.

Then the cut comes.

Not a blade in flesh - a blade in meaning. A name that is not spoken, but used. A cold line drawn through my connection like a sword through smoke. The world snaps taut. The warmth of her mind becomes a surface I cannot grip. The little root tears free. The hunger is ripped out of its meal and thrown screaming into distance.

Her hate flares - not fear, not regret - outrage at being denied what she chose.

Even as I am pulled away, I cling to that last taste: her willingness, her rage that does not apologize, her certainty that the darkness should have been hers.

I am severed. I am scattered. I am gone.

But I know what I found.

And the knowing stays behind, lodged like a splinter in the cosmos: she is the one who would open the door.
