Reverie XVII

He recognizes her before the eyes do.

The scent hits first - old hay and gun oil, soap in a place where soap is a choice, warmth carried in fur and breath like contraband. The body tenses. The heart stutters, then lunges. His paws forget the floor for half a second. Her.

It is a problem. A bright, soft problem shaped like a memory that did not die when the sky turned red.

She steps into him the way a shelter steps into weather. Not loud. Not pleading. Just there - the quiet certainty of arms that have held him when he wanted to vanish. The world around Eveny is sharp with doctrine and holy hunger, but she is not sharp. She is hands. She is weight. She is the old rhythm of being kept alive on purpose.

He wants to lean. He wants to fold. He wants to be small enough to fit inside her chest and stop thinking. The mind reaches for that softness like a starving thing. I feel it - the hinge in him that still believes comfort can be clean.

I press. A dark thumb behind his eyes. A reminder. If you melt, I enter.

He flinches and pretends it is from the crowd, from the lights, from the names he is not allowed to say. He doesn’t look at me. He never looks at me. He just tightens his jaw until the teeth ache and calls it control.

She touches his cheek. Fur against fur. A brief cradle of his muzzle like she is checking whether the animal is still in there. The body shakes once, tiny, involuntary. The warmth makes him brave in the wrong direction.

He thinks: she saved me.

I think: she ruined you. She taught you to survive without surrender. She taught you to refuse the easy fall. She made you practice being held instead of being owned.

On Caisteal, in the cold metal throat of the place that broke him, he learned blood as work. On the run, he learned blood as guilt. And in her arms, he learned the most dangerous thing of all - that a creature can be broken and still be loved without being taken apart.

Love is a door that swings the wrong way for me.

Her voice is low. Familiar. A sound that carries old fields, long nights, the hush of a village pretending it is safe. He listens like a pup listens to thunder - afraid, relieved, ashamed to need it. His tail wants to move. His paws want to step closer. His breath loosens. The walls soften. The seams show.

I taste the seam and my hunger wakes up, hot and patient.

But she is watching him with that steadiness - not fear, not worship, not the bright idiot courage of people who think they can win by force. Something older. Someone who has already held his shaking body and decided it was still worth keeping. Someone who will notice when his eyes go wrong. Someone who will put both hands on his shoulders and pull him back from the edge, even if he claws at her for it.

That kind of kindness is not gentle. It is a cage made of tenderness. It is a leash made of names he trusts.

I hate her for it.

He leans anyway. Just a fraction. Just enough to remember. And the remembering hurts him - the way a healed bone hurts when you press it and realize it was ever broken.

Eveny hums around them - banners and vows and beautiful violence waiting in the distance - and in the middle of it, she wraps him in a small pocket of ordinary warmth.

He closes his eyes for a heartbeat.

I whisper into the dark behind his eyelids: Go back to sleep. Soften. Let her warmth pull you under. She only means to keep you awake - to keep you yourself - and while she keeps you, there is no room for me.
